FLEETWERX and Naval Postgraduate School Assessment Event for Sea and Expeditionary Advanced Manufacturing (SEAM)

Description

The Joint Force must maintain readiness, material redundancy, and operational self-sufficiency for highly contested environments. As the Department of War scales the use of advanced manufacturing (reverse engineering, computer-aided design & manufacturing, machine operations, verification testing), advanced manufacturing systems that can be deployed to the point of need are required to manufacture mission-critical parts.  The Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) Consortium for Advanced Manufacturing Research and Education(CAMRE) and Naval Surface Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet (SURFPAC) seeks an advanced manufacturing system capable of currently operating both aboard ship and shore to enhance force readiness.

‍

Objective

Proposed solutions must address Top Level Requirements (TLRs):

‍

1.    Transportability: Capableof being transported with industry standard shipping methodology:

                   a.     Total system weight must be < 10,000lbs

                   b.     Configured in a 10’ ISO container or smaller

2.    Power Requirements: Capableof integrating into both ship and ashore 480V, 100A, 60Hz 3 phase power receptacles:

                   a.     Ship Plug: comply with MIL-C-22992 Class L MS90556 (ex. Mouser #:654-MS90556C44151P)

                   b.     Ashore Plug: comply with industry standard sleeve and pin connection.

3.    System Configuration: Mustintegrate both Additive and Subtractive CNC technology:

                   a.     Additive:Must be capable of operating aboard ship (powder-based technologies are notpermitted at this time)

                                              i.     Wire Direct Energy Deposition (Wire-DED) or similar novel solution

ii.     Setup, such as laser alignment, must be robust enough to operate in high vibration environment

iii.     Internal inert-gas and compressed-gas generation system

                   b.     Subtractive:

                                              i.     Minimum3-axis mill

                                              ii.     Automatic tool changer

                                              iii.     Automated probing

                                              iv.     Coolantleakage prevention system

                                              v.     User-intuitive controller programmable on spot and with file upload

4.    System Availability: Advanced Manufacturing System must be available for use at the Naval Postgraduate School Advanced Manufacturing Facility prior to end of CY26.

‍

Examples:

Lease a HAAS TM-1P with Meltio Blue Laser containerized in 10’ ISO with nitrogen gas generator and air compressor. This is the preferred subsystem combination to maximize synergy with other research initiatives.
